Segura's single in 11th lifts Phillies over Diamondbacks 7-6
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Jean Segura singled with one out in the 11th inning to give the Philadelphia Phillies a 7-6 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night in a game with a number of late-inning twists.
Brad Miller hit a tying two-run homer in the 10th, and Bryce Harper also went deep for the Phillies, who snapped a three-game skid and won for the third time in 11 games. The Phillies remained 5½ games behind NL East-leading Atlanta.
Christian Walker hit a tying two-run homer in the ninth, and Ketel Marte connected on a go-ahead two-run homer in the 10th, but it wasn't enough for Arizona. The Diamondbacks are an NL-worst 44-86.
Segura ended the 4-hour, 12-minute contest with a one-out single to right off Taylor Clarke (1-1) that scored Ronald Torreyes.
The start of the game was delayed 30 minutes due to COVID-19 contact tracing.
Earlier in the day, the Phillies put pitcher Zach Eflin, catcher Andrew Knapp and infielder-outfielder Luke Williams on the COVID-19 IL. Knapp was in the original starting lineup and replaced by J.T. Realmuto about 45 minutes before the scheduled first pitch.
Philadelphia looked headed to victory in the ninth before Walker homered off Ian Kennedy, tying the score at 4-all. Phillies relievers have blown 26 saves this season, a franchise record.
The Diamondbacks took a 6-4 lead in the 10th when Marte hit a 2-0, 93-mph fastball from Enyel De Los Santos (2-2) over the wall in right-center. De Los Santos pitched a scoreless 11th.
Harper stayed hot during August and put the Phillies ahead 2-0 in the third with his 25th homer of the season, a line-drive, opposite-field shot that traveled an estimated 406 feet with an exit velocity of 110.4 mph. The Phillies slugger has nine homers and 20 RBIs in 24 games this month.
